Emergency Roof Leak: What to Do Before the Roofer Arrives
Quick steps to minimise water damage while waiting for an emergency roofing callout.
Water coming through the ceiling is stressful โ especially during heavy Midlands rain. What you do in the first hour can significantly reduce damage to plaster, insulation, electrics and belongings while you wait for an emergency roofer.
Follow these steps to stay safe and limit the impact.
1. Stay Safe โ Do Not Climb on the Roof
It is tempting to throw a tarpaulin up yourself, but wet roofs are extremely dangerous. Falls from height are one of the most common DIY accidents. Leave external work to trained roofers with proper safety equipment.
If water is near light fittings or sockets, turn off the electricity to affected areas at the consumer unit if it is safe to do so.
2. Contain the Water Inside
Place buckets or containers directly under active drips. Lay towels or plastic sheeting on floors and move furniture, electronics and valuables away from the affected area.
If the ceiling is bulging with trapped water, you may need to puncture it gently with a screwdriver and a bucket ready โ a controlled release prevents a larger collapse.
3. Document the Damage
Take photos and videos of the leak inside and any visible damage outside from ground level. This documentation helps with insurance claims and gives your roofer useful information before they arrive.
Note when the leak started and whether it worsens during rainfall.
4. Call an Emergency Roofer Immediately
Prime Roof Works offers 24/7 emergency callouts across Birmingham and the West Midlands. The sooner you call, the sooner we can make the property weatherproof โ often attending the same day.
Describe what you are seeing clearly: active drip, storm damage, missing tiles, or water spreading across the loft.
5. Do Not Attempt Permanent Repairs Yourself
Duct tape, silicone sealant and thrown-over tiles rarely solve the underlying problem and can make professional repair harder. Temporary containment inside is fine โ permanent fixes need proper diagnosis.
- Use buckets and towels to contain water
- Move valuables away from the leak
- Photograph damage for insurance
- Call a 24/7 emergency roofer
- Avoid climbing on the roof yourself
